Summary of Skin trial to study the short and medium term skin hydration plus longevity of moisturizing effect
of Moana’s marine glycans based products on skin
Executive Summary
Various skin measurement devices are available, which allow objective assessment of the effects of topical treatments on skin properties. The measurement of skin parameters, and how they are affected by topical application of actives and cosmetic formulations, is becoming increasingly important for the substantiation of product claims. Skin is a multifaceted system and the relationships between measurable parameters of the skin are complex. Hydration of the protective stratum corneum layer is necessary to maintain its integrity and essential barrier functionality.
In the work reported here Indipendent Scientific Institute conducted a human volunteer skin study to evaluate three newly developed formulations containing glycans (up to 95%) from a species of native New Zealand red seaweed and native botanical extracts.
The study focussed on the short and medium term skin hydration effects that result from continuous daily application over a period of 14 days. In addition we evaluated the longevity of the moisturising effect upon cessation of cream application.
The formulations are being developed as part of a premium skin care product range Moana Skincare from new Zealand produced by Eternal Youth Ltd.
The restorative effects of an Instant Lifting Mask formulation and a combination of intensive Serum and Renewal Day Cream formulations were investigated.
Study Procedure
Twelve healthy volunteers participated in the trial. The hydrating effects of the different treatments were evaluated by non-invasive skin measurement techniques. Differences between the control (no cream) skin sites and treated skin sites were calculated relative to baseline skin values, and statistical significance was evaluated using Student’s t-test.
Summary of Results for Short to Medium Term Hydration
The Instant Lifting Mask formulation provided increased hydration from the first application. Skin hydration improved with continuous use over the 14 day period. Data collected for the volunteer trial was shown to be significant, at the 99% level, on all measurement days.
The combination of Serum followed by Renewal Day Cream formulation provided increased skin hydration from the first application. Skin hydration improved with continuous use over the 14 day period. Data collected for the volunteer trial was shown to be significant, at the 99% level, on all measurement days.
Summary of Results for Longevity of Hydration Serum and Renewal day Cream
During the 14 day application period the combination of serum and day cream gave statistically significant improved hydration levels than the control for all treatment days.
The combination of serum followed by day cream formulation provided increased skin hydration from the first application. Skin hydration improved with continuous use over the 14 day period. Data collected for the volunteer trial was shown to be significant, at the 99% level, on all measurement days. Upon cessation of serum and day cream application (after 14 days consecutive application) the increase in hydration was maintained for up to 60 hours after the last application.
Summary of Results for Longevity of Hydration Instant Lifting Mask
During the 14 day application period the instant lifting mask gave statistically significant improved hydration levels than the control for all treatment days.
